'iThemba Alibulali' , 2019

iThemba alilbulali’ was a collaborative work made with artist, ‘King Debz’. The work reflects the meaning of the title which means "hope does not kill". In this painting the background is a script that artist King Debz created based on the English alphabet. Each symbol represents a combination of two letters in the alphabet and he uses this custom script to write African proverbs or personal sayings. We created this painting during a very dark time in South Africa, where gender based violence reached a long overdue boiling point with the murder of Uyinene Mrwetyana. The young boy represents the corrupted innocence of young boys in South Africa. The artists reflects that we have not failed' where there is hope.
